Nick McGlashan was a fisherman who was raised near the Dutch Harbour on Akutan Island. He was named after his great uncle, Nick McGlashan, who worked on the first boat rumored to have pioneered the U.S. crab industry, the F/V Deep Sea.

McGlashan was known for his witty quips, working through the pain, and not stopping the job until it is done. He had also kept the boat running through all kinds of mechanical issues, manufacturing quick fixes on the fly.

The Davidson County Medical Examiner confirmed that McGlashan died at the age of 33 on 27th December 2020. However, no further comment was made as to the case in under investigation.

McGlashan began working with the crab boats in Akutan Island and the Dutch Harbour Fishing Hub. He used his fishing skills and experience to establish a professional career. McGlashan was a crew member on “Deadliest Catch”, a show based on the workouts and discomfort that fishing crews face at the Bering Sea.

According to TMZ.com, “McGlashan was an unrelenting figure on the boat. Nothing could stop him…not pain, nothing. He never gave up…even when the boat had perilous mechanical problems”.

McGlashan died on 27th December 2020 at the age of 33, the Davidson County Medical Examiner confirmed. However, officials did not comment on the cause of his death. 

In a statement to The Hollywood Reporter, the statement read:

“Our deepest sympathy goes out to Nick’s loved ones during this difficult time. Nick came from a long line of crabbers and was known for his great depth of knowledge. He also had a sharp sense of humor even in the most difficult conditions. He will be deeply missed by all those who knew him”.

McGlashan had appeared in 78 episodes of the “Deadliest Catch”, from its premiere in 2013 until his death. He worked on the Summer Bay fishing vessel.

Nick McGlashan’s Struggle With Alcohol And Drug Addiction

McGlashan had a lot of fishing experience and, according to Captain Bill, he is the epitome of a true crabber”. But he got himself into alcohol and drug addiction, which resulted in him entering rehab during the 13th season of the show.

McGlashan struggled for years with his addiction, and according to The Hollywood Reporter, it got so bad that he began drinking half-gallon of vodka, shooting up with 1gram of meth and 2grams of heroin in one day. McGlashan tried very hard to remain sober and admitted that he was trying to inspire others to get clean.

Though he had his ups and downs, McGlashan battled endlessly to stay sober and embraced a new sober lifestyle, and was committed to his recovery.
