Heinsohn was born in Jersey City, New Jersey. He did his schooling at St. Michael’s High School. He was one scholar student from the start. Because of his intellect, he earned a scholarship to Holy Cross in Worcester, Massachusetts, and became the school’s all-time leading scorer.

His basketball talent soon caught the eye of the officials and he was selected as the Boston Celtics ‘regional in 1956. Already in his first season he surpassed everyone and was named the NBA ’Rookie of the Year’ following acquiring his initial championship ring. This was Tommy’s most prized possessions. After owning several matches and building a rapport in the field in the 1969-70 season Tommy entered into the coaching dimension. He became the Celtics head coach and lead the team to more victories and was named the ’Coach of the year’ in the 1972-73 season.

His broadcasting career made him come under the real limelight. In 1981, Heinsohn became the color commentator for Celtics television broadcast, sharing screens with Mike Gorman. This spontaneous pair entertained people for several decades and were loved by their followers.

Heinsohn was inaugurated into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame as a player in 1986 and as a coach in 2015. He is one of only four people inducted into the Hall of Fame as a player and coach, joining Bill Sharman, John Wooden, and Lenny Wilkens on that list.
