Last year’s election has been quite exceptional. One of the most closely contested elections in the history of American democracy, which also means that the country is more divided than ever.
Things weren’t all dark though. The 2020 Senate elections saw Sarah McBride, win a seat from Delaware. This makes McBride the first openly transgender state senator. After her victory, the LGBTQ activist was quoted saying: “We did it!”
Democratic Candidate Sarah McBride succeeds the seat of her predecessor, Harris McDowell after she defeated the Republican nominee Steve Washington.

Since Sarah McBride is fairly new in the world of politics. There aren’t any records of any major financial assets that McBride has.
Since she has been the Press Secretary for the Human Rights Campaign for quite some time now, her annual salary can range somewhere between $65,000 and $75,000.
A Victory for the entire LGBTQ Community
This will make her the highest-ranking elected transgender official in the country. McBride, in a statement to Associated Press, said:
“I think tonight’s results demonstrate what I’ve known my entire life, which is that the residents of this district are fair-minded, and they’re looking at candidates’ ideas and not their identity.”
In 2016, Sarah McBride also became the first openly transgender woman to speak at a major party’s convention when she took the stage at the Democratic National Convention.
The President of the LGBTQ Victory Fund, Annise Parker, called McBride’s win “a powerful testament to the growing influence of transgender leaders in our politics”.
In her victory statement Sarah McBride also told the associated press :
“It is my hope that a young LGBTQ [lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and queer] kid here in Delaware or really anywhere in this country can look at the results and know that our democracy is big enough for them, too.”
Life before winning the elections
Born in Wilmington, Delaware Sarah McBride started working as a campaign staffer at quite a young age. Even prior to coming out she worked on many political campaigns including Governor Jack Markell’s 2008 campaign and the Delaware Attorney General campaign of Beau Biden in 2010.
It was during her last week as the Student Body President at American University when she came out as a transgender in her college’s student newspaper. That’s when she received a call from Beau Biden who wanted to let her know how proud he was.
She then went to intern at the White House in 2012. This made her the first openly transgender to work at the White House at any position. She has since been an active campaigner of LGBTQ rights as well as human rights and has influenced the passing of many humanitarian laws.
