The awfully witty, science fiction anthology television series ’Black Mirror’ is currently on everyone’s nerves. Its handcrafted storyline with a different plot, various celebrities, rare to individual episodes, leaving the viewers blown away by the end of each of them.
The basic theme of the show is the empowerment of technology on humans and how it affects one’s life proving when anything goes extreme it takes a devil form. It investigates updated society and the unimaginative aftermaths of advanced technology. It is everything a video game junkie would want in a Netflix show.
Charlie Brooker is the man behind this British series along with Annabel Jones. It is perfectly built with the startling cast with a total of five seasons. Initial two series were released on Chanel 4 in December 2011 and February 2013 respectively. Later in September 2015, Netflix entered the chat and stopped the program.
”If technology is a drug – and it does feel like a drug – then what, precisely, are the side effects? This area – between delight and discomfort – is where Black Mirror, my new drama series, is set. The ‘black mirror’ of the title is the one you’ll find on every wall, on every desk, in the palm of every hand: the cold, shiny screen of a TV, a monitor, a smartphone.”
This is how Brooker came up with the series title. The show is more like a snatched version of Brooke’s ’The Twilight Zone’ which has quite similar genres.
The show is ranked 8.8 by IMDb, 83% by Rotten Tomatoes which is impressive for a show with unfamiliar content and unique to the viewers. The show has gained much support and gave them a new outlook on life and much-needed vision to this social media-obsessed world.
Some audience review includes:
”The very first thing that struck my mind when I started watching “Black Mirror,” was that I had not watched anything quite like it before. Within the first five minutes, as the show opens, the metaphorical bomb had dropped.”
”One of the best series of all time. I started watching and I just couldn’t stop.”
”Absolute masterpiece. Each episode takes a unique and deep look at technological issues we face today.”
The reviews says it all, what we are missing out on. It’s not for someone light-hearted and looking for happy endings.
The critics have been in favour of the show it has been nominated for eighty-four awards and won twenty-five of them, including four Emmys for the show and two for Bandersnatch, six total in the pockets of Brooke and team.
The Bandersnatch boy
On 28 December 2018, Brooke gave the entertainment world a masterpiece. It was an extended episode, a standalone movie from the house of the Black Mirror and a game-changer, connecting the viewers with the character on a spiritual level and making a decision for them, be it a cereal or killing his father, proving it’s a show of tomorrow. Netflix dropped the surprise trailer just a day before the release of the film. The aim was to make it an interactive movie, as Netflix always wanted, it took longer to film it in comparison to other conventional Black Mirror episodes. This was the sole reason for the wait of the fifth season, because one masterwork at a time. The experience of watching such a film is remarkable, 90 minutes to take your breath away. One of the resources explained the movie in a flawless way possible, ”It means that we aren’t even watching the same episode as each other, even when we’re literally watching the same episode as each other.”
These are the times when we don’t regret buying a Netflix subscription. When in an interview Brooker was asked if he would be making more movies like Bandersnatch, he revealed:
”While we were making “Bandersnatch”, we were saying we’d never put ourselves through this again. And then, I think, by the end, you forget how harrowing it was. So there have been some ideas that have bubbled up, and I’d never say never to returning.”
Kudos to Netflix!
After seven years of hard endeavor and thriving five seasons with unending positive reviews and boosting fanbase, season six is a necessity. The show was said to be in pre-production before the arrival of COVID-19. There is no fixed date yet for the release of the next season, the plot remains confidential as well but we may see new faces this season as the series avoid repetitiveness of the cast.
Considering the current scenario of the world, we can’t practically expect a trailer soon. Nevertheless, let’s be faithful as Brooker said, ”I don’t think there’s anything to stop us.” eliminating the pandemic, obviously.
We can’t wait to see Brooker, Jones, and Netflix take over our minds again.
