When Marco Rubio contested in the Republican primaries for the 2016 Presidential elections, he was the most approachable and relatable of all the candidates. It wasn’t because his policies made more sense than his contemporaries.

Rubio was the only Republican candidate who wasn’t a millionaire or a billionaire. His poor financial decisions made him relatable to the average American. He is currently serving as the United States Senator for the state of Florida.

The 49-year-old Cuban American senator was the city commissioner for West Miami before he was elected to represent the 111th district in the Florida House of Representatives.

What is Marco Rubio’s Net Worth?

As of 2020, according to his most recent financial disclosure, Marco Rubio is expected to have a net worth of approximately $400,000.

He has a history of making poor financial choices. In fact, in 2011, like most Americans, Rubio too was struggling with student loan debts. The senator had a combined student loan debt of $100,000 from both his undergraduate and his law school studies. It was only after the publication of his book “An American Son” that Rubio was able to pay off his debts.

Even when he struggled with student loan debt, he spent around $80,000 on a luxurious speedboat. He even cashed out his $69,000 retirement plan to pay for a fridge, repair his air conditioning, and cover some school expenses.

Rubio also had a jointly owned Tallahassee property for investment purposes which he had to sell at a loss after narrowly avoiding foreclosure after having failed to make the mortgage payments on the property. He also has a bad habit of accidentally using his party fund credit to pay off personal expenses. He later explained that this was an unintentional error as he used to pull out the wrong card from his wallet. Intentional or not, Rubio spent $22,000 using a Republican party American Express card for personal purchases on items like flowers or hotel bills.

Life and Career of the Republican Senator

Both of Rubio’s parents were immigrants from Cuba. He attended the University of Florida where he earned a Bachelors degree in Political Science. He earned his Juris Prudence degree from the University of Miami School of Law in 1996.

After being elected to represent the 111th district in the Florida House of Representatives in 2000, Rubio was subsequently elected Speaker of the Florida House. In 2009, he announced his plans to run for the Senate seat from Florida and eventually won in the 2010 elections.

Marco Rubio said he had no plans to seek re-election to the Senate and instead announced that he would be running for president. He later suspended his presidential campaign after losing the Florida Republican primary to Donald Trump and later decided to run for re-election to the Senate.
