iPhone 11 and Pixel 4 raise standards by lowering megapixels.

Apple iPhone 11 and Google Pixel 4 have yet again proven to be the best phones of 2019, but this time not by adding new updates or features. They have established the fact that no other phone can beat their camera skills.

While there is an increase in the market for “improved camera quality”, Apple and Google are successfully redefining the properties of a good camera phone. There are huge companies whose smartphones offer 48-, 64-, and soon 108-megapixel sensors imposing the idea that the more the Megapixels, the better the quality of pictures. Breaking away from these norms and myths, the two tech-giants have certified the presence of a camera sensor with a lower Megapixel, 12MP to be precise.

Though a factor, the quality of the image certainly does not depend solely on the megapixels. Which is why some phones with a high megapixel often take blurry pictures, too. The phone also needs to have a high-quality lens, high-tech hardware system, etc. A good example of one such phone is the Huawei Mate 30 . Although the cheaper alternatives often fail miserably.

These pictures were taken by the Apple iPhone 11 and the Google Pixel 4 which have a 12 megapixel camera. Compared to the pictures taken by some 48 or 108MP camera, these obviously get the upper hand.

This happens because most of the phone cameras use the pixel-binning technology. For the nerds, this technology rather than a traditional Bayer color filter, uses a Quad-Bayer filter pattern. In reality, these cameras have a color resolution closer to one-quarter of their pixel count. So a 48MP pixel binning camera is actually like a 12MP camera, 64MP closer to 16MP, and 108MP closer to 27MP in terms of real resolvable detail. That’s presuming a cheaper smartphone company does a decent job with the lenses too, which is unlikely.

Most companies in the recent times have focused more on improving the software to enhance the computation of the images, instead of the hardware. This advancement in the computational photography had resulted in the improvement of the most famous and loved features like night modes, bokeh depth-of-field effects, and AI scene detection.

Because of it’s rapid growth in the technological sector, the professional camera hardware algorithms have started showing up in cheaper phones as well. They even offer a night mode and the bokeh mode.
