The 2021 Grammy Awards have been widely criticized after the nominations were announced on Thursday. The 63rd Grammy nominations have left out some of the major albums released this year which resulted in a widespread backlash from fans and artists alike.
The Weeknd was the first one to speak out against the corrupt nomination and award process of the Grammys. After all the R&B star’s “After Hours” was hands down this year’s best album, probably even his career-best. Weeknd has won all major awards this year which is why it was all the more shocking to see that the Grammy hasn’t given him a single nomination.
Now pop-star Halsey has also decided to speak out against the unfair practices of the Grammy. The 26-year-old singer is finally getting things off of her chest as she too didn’t receive a single nomination despite her album “Manic” doing so well, with the song “Without Me” even reaching the No. 1 spot on the Billboard Hot 100 list.
Halsey has a history of being snubbed from the Grammys
This is not the first instance when the Grammys have snubbed Halsey. In fact, the singer has never been nominated in a Big Four category, which includes ‘album of the year‘, ‘record of the year‘, ‘song of the year‘ and ‘best new artist‘ category at the Grammys.
“The Grammys are an elusive process.”
While most people from the industry were quick to criticize Grammy for their corrupt practices, politics, and the practice of giving awards to the “most important artist” rather than to an artist who’s music was the best amongst all. She wrote to Instagram saying,
“I’ve been thinking and wanted to choose my words carefully because a lot of people have extended sympathy and apology to me since the Grammy nominations.”
She went on to slam the Grammys for structuring their awards around behind the scenes private performances or exclusive television performance. She said,
“It can often be about behind the scenes private performances, knowing the right people, campaigning through the grapevine, with the right handshakes and ‘bribes’ that can be just as ambiguous enough to pass as ‘non-bribes’.”
Halsey also talked about the Recording Academy it’s not always about the music or quality or culture. In fact, the only way artists can secure a nomination is by committing to exclusive TV performances.
She too showed support for Weeknd for not getting a nomination despite giving such a great album. While concluding her statement, Halsey said,
“The Weeknd deserves better, and ‘Manic’ did too. Perhaps it’s unbecoming of me to say so but I can’t care anymore. While I am THRILLED for my talented friends who were recognized this year, I am hoping for more transparency or reform. But I’m sure this post will blacklist me anyway.”
