He started playing as a wide receiver for the Arkansas State University and Henderson State University before becoming a defensive coordinator and head coach for Hughes High School.

In 2006, Malzahn became Arkansas’ team offensive coordinator and wide receiver coach before moving to Tulsa as their co-offensive coordinator, and quarterbacks and assistant head coach in 2007. He became the offensive coordinator and quarterback coach for Auburn in 2008.

Malzahn became the head coach for Arkansas in 2012 and was re-hired by Auburn as their head coach in 2013. Malzahn rose to national fame as head coach in 2013 for coaching one of the biggest turnarounds in college football history. He led the Auburn Tigers to an SEC Championship in 2013 and an appearance in the BCS Championship in 2014.

Gus Malzahn Fired As Auburn’s Head Coach

After coaching the team for eight seasons and leading them to an SEC Championship, Auburn Tigers fired Malzahn after stating that they are looking for a leadership change. Over the years, Malzahn has compiled a record of 68-35, leading the team to the SEC Championship and a BCS Championship appearance, including an SEC West, win in 2017.

Malzahn had signed an extension deal of seven years in 2017 after Auburn won 10 games and appear in an SEC Championship. But the team fell short and finished third and fifth in the subsequent games in 2018 and 2019, respectively. 

According to ESPN, Malzahn was informed of his firing before a team meeting. It was confirmed that Malzahn would be paid the remainder of his contract. In the meantime, defensive co-ordinator, Kevin Steele would take over as interim head coach a head coach is found. Auburn President, Jay Gogue stated,
