Theodor Seuss Geisel was an American children’s author, poet, cartoonist, filmmaker, and illustrator. He is well-known for his work writing and illustrating more than 60 books under the pen name Dr. Seuss. Dr. Seuss’s six books including, “And to Think That I Saw It on Mulberry Street” and “If I Ran the Zoo” will stop being published because they were deemed to have “insensitive and racist imagery.” Dr. Seuss Enterprises announced on Tuesday.
“These books portray people in ways that are hurtful and wrong,” Dr. Seuss Enterprises told The Associated Press in a statement that coincided with the late author and illustrator’s birthday.
“Ceasing sales of these books is only part of our commitment and our broader plan to ensure Dr. Seuss Enterprises’ catalog represents and supports all communities and families,” it said.
The other books that would be no longer published are “McElligot’s Pool,” “On Beyond Zebra!,” “Scrambled Eggs Super!,” and “The Cat’s Quizzer.”
The Author’s Early Years
Geisel was born on the 2nd of March in the year 1904. Born and brought up in Springfield, Massachusetts, he is the son of Henrietta and Theodor Robert Geisel. Seuss went to Dartmouth University and was a member of Sigma Phi Epsilon. He also worked for Dartmouth Jack-O-Lantern magazine and ultimately became editor-in-chief. Following Dartmouth College, he attended Lincoln College in Oxford for his Ph.D. in English Literature. In 1927, he left Oxford to start his career as an illustrator and cartoonist for Vanity Fair, Life, and many other publications.
Seuss has worked as an illustrator for FLIT and Standard Oil and also used to spend some time drawing political cartoons for a New York City daily newspaper, PM, during World War II.
After the war, Seuss returned with his wife to write children’s books in La Jolla, California. Seuss has been nominated several times for the Newbury and Caldecott Awards but never won. Seuss has won the Laura Ingalls Wilder Medal and a special Pulitzer Prize in 1984. Dr. Seuss died on September 24, 1991, at his home in La Jolla, California, at the age of 87 due to oral cancer.
