Candice DeLong was born in Chicago, Illinois, on July 16, 1950. She received her higher education at Northwestern University in Evanston. DeLong worked as a psychiatric nurse at Northwestern University Hospital before becoming a criminal profiler. After getting divorced at the age of 28, she decided to attend the FBI training academy in Quantico, Virginia.
DeLong worked in the FBI’s Chicago office after graduating from Quantico. In 1982, she was assigned to the investigation of the Chicago Tylenol murders, in which seven people were killed by Tylenol capsules laced with potassium cyanide. The incident eventually resulted in new, more secure packaging for over-the-counter medications, as well as the implementation of federal anti-tampering laws. Later, in the mid-1990s, DeLong was one of three FBI agents chosen to oversee the manhunt for Ted Kaczynski, the infamous Unabomber. In 1995, Kaczynski was apprehended in Lincoln, Montana.
