Amanda S. C. Gorman is a poet and activist from America, Los Angels. Her work mainly focuses on issues of feminism, oppression, marginalization, race, and the African diaspora. Gorman became the first woman to be titled National Youth Poet Laureate. She published the poetry book in 2015 named, The One for Whom Food Is Not Enough. Gorman said that she was inspired by the speech of Pakistani Nobel Prize laureate Malala Yousafzai and wanted to become a youth delegate for the United Nations in 2013. In 2014 she was selected as the youth poet laureate of Los Angeles. 

In May 2020, she made her appearance in an episode of Some Good News web series hosted by John Krasinski, where she got a chance to virtually meet Oprah Winfrey and issued a virtual commencement address for those people who could not attend the physical commencement due to the COVID-19 pandemic. 

On January 20, 2021, she attended President Joe Biden’s inauguration and presented her poem “The Hill We Climb”, becoming the youngest poet to read at a presidential inauguration in U.S history.

22-year-old Amanda became the youngest person to present a poem at a U.S presidential inauguration. Amanda recited her poem ‘The Hill We Climb’ which continued for about six minutes. 

She also received a job offer from Morgan State University, President David Wilson, because of her appearance and the way she delivered her poem on the presidential inauguration.

He tweeted: “Ms. Gorman, I need you as our Poet-in-Residence at the National Treasure, ⁦@MorganStateU,” 

⁩ “Outstanding!!!!! Consider this a job offer!”

He said in a telephone interview that the job offer was 100 percent interview genuine.

Wilson said, “I was glued to the TV as I was watching her,” 

I’m very serious about opening an opportunity for her to come here as a poet in residence. We have all kinds of authors on campus, and we think that being at Morgan for a year would give her an even deeper and wider perspective on the issues she is addressing. If she would accept this offer, I would move on it in a heartbeat.

“I will be watching my emails.”

Amanda Gorman was born in the year 1998 in Los Angeles. She was raised by her mother Joan Wicks along with her two siblings. Gorman has a twin sister named Gabriel who is also an activist and a filmmaker.

She attended a private school named New Roads in Santa Monica. Later on as a senior received a Milken Family Foundation college scholarship. Amanda studied sociology at Harvard College and graduated cum laude as a member of Phi Beta Kappa.

As of 2021, she has scheduled the release of her two books in September 2021, a poetry collection named The Hill We Climb and a project for youth titled Change Sings: A Children’s Anthem.

She is a member of St Brigid Church of Los Angeles and is a Black Catholic.
