Alexandria Ocasio Cortez gave hope to Americans all over when she defeated Democratic Caucus Joe Crowley in the 2018 elections for New York’s 14th Confessional district.

Joe Crowley had been holding on to his seat for 10 years before he faced a crushing defeat at Cortez’s hands. Many considered Crowley’s defeat at the hands of Cortez as probably the biggest upset in the 2018 midterm elections.

Cortez became the youngest woman to serve in the United States Congress when she took office at age of 29. Popularly referred to by the public as AOC, she has a very active social media existence.

Ocasio still has a pending student loan debt of thousands of dollars. She said :

“It was literally easier for me to become the youngest woman in American history elected to Congress than it is to pay off my student loan debt.”

Giving Voice to “Everyday Americans”

AOC won the hearts of Americans when she was elected in 2018. AOC’s campaign promised change for the low to middle-income Americans.

AOC advocates for a progressive America, an America that comprises of Medicare for all, the Green New Deal, a federal job guarantee, and abolishing the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE).

The people connect with AOC because she too faced the same problems that they did. Be it the student loan debts or the families unable to pay their mortgages, AOC has been through it all unlike other members of the congress.

AOC clearly stated at a rally of hers that :

“Everyday Americans deserve to be represented by everyday Americans.”

She has been a voice for the millennials who have high student loan debts just like her. She also actively advocates for a healthcare system that serves everyone.

AOC criticized the very structure of this system. In an interview to CNN, she said :

“In order for me to get a chance to have healthcare, in order for me to get a chance to pay off my student loans, I had to do something that was nearly impossible. And I don’t think that that is the bar through which a person should be able to access education, healthcare and a bevy of other things that should be considered human rights.”

Her progressive socialist beliefs have won her the support of people. Americans believe she will be the first woman President of America. The future is only bright for young congresswoman.
